Two-ta

圣彼得堡 🇷🇺 创始人控股 · 垂直整合

Two-ta built a decade of St. Petersburg credibility on Italian leather and German hardware — then March 2022 sanctions banned both overnight. No source documents how the workshop replaced them. What is documented: production never stopped, headcount grew from 50-plus to 70-plus, and a second city joined the map.

Two-ta’s whole pitch was a supply chain: Italian calf leather, German PRYM hardware, and a St. Petersburg workshop stitching them into bags built to last. In March 2022, two of those three ingredients became sanctioned imports. The brand that built a decade of credibility on “European-grade, made in St. Petersburg” had to prove that promise could survive without Europe.

Two-ta · 成立于 2009 · Saint Petersburg, Russia

A workshop built to sell what it makes

Tatiana Reusova (Татьяна Реусова) and Anton Evgeniev (Антон Евгеньев) opened Two-ta’s St. Petersburg leather workshop in 2009 — the brand name drawn from “two,” for the two founders, and the initials of their own names, “t” and “a.” From the outset the business was structured around a single line of control: the workshop that cut and stitched the leather also sold the finished bag, first through word of mouth and later through the company’s own retail floor and website. There was no wholesale layer to negotiate with and no marketplace algorithm to satisfy — a vertically integrated, direct-to-consumer model that Two-ta has never departed from.

That structure carried real constraints. St. Petersburg had no deep bench of trained leather masters when the workshop opened, so Reusova and Evgeniev trained their own — a slower, costlier path than hiring experienced staff, but one that let the brand set its own craft standard rather than inherit someone else’s. “Since it’s difficult to find qualified masters, Tatiana and Anton often train employees themselves,” RBC Style reported in 2019. By that point the workshop employed more than 50 people producing bags, backpacks, wallets, belts, cosmetic cases and document covers, sourced in Italian calf leather and finished with German PRYM hardware, at a pace of roughly one new model a month.

Registering the business, scaling the model

Formal incorporation came two years after the workshop’s founding: Anton Evgeniev registered the business as a sole proprietorship (ИП Евгеньев Антон Валентинович) on 5 May 2011, giving the brand a legal identity — INN 780730276450, OGRNIP 311784712500626 — distinct from the informal workshop that had opened in 2009. As a registered ИП rather than a limited company, Two-ta files no public financial statements; the brand’s revenue has never been publicly disclosed, and no reliable estimate is possible from public records. That is a structural feature of its ownership form, not a gap in the research.

Growth through the 2010s followed the product range outward from Reusova’s original bag designs into a broader leather-goods catalogue, while a loyal customer base — some buyers report purchasing Two-ta pieces since at least 2018 — gave the brand a retail floor worth expanding. By 2019, national fashion press had noticed: RBC Style named Two-ta among eight defining Petersburg fashion brands, citing the imported materials, the growing headcount, and the monthly product cadence as evidence of a workshop that had outgrown its founding scale.

The materials the brand was built on became sanctioned

In March 2022, the European Union’s fifth sanctions package took effect. Council Regulation (EU) 2022/428, in force from 15 March 2022, banned exports of luxury goods — including leather goods and accessories — to Russia above a threshold of EUR 300 per item. A parallel US Bureau of Industry and Security rule imposed a similar ban above $1,000, effective the following day. For a workshop whose entire identity rested on Italian calf leather and German PRYM hardware, the measures struck at both named inputs simultaneously, compounded by the SWIFT payment friction that made even unsanctioned European transactions harder to clear.

The threat was not abstract. Two-ta’s positioning had never been generic “handmade leather” — it was specifically European materials, worked by Russian hands, in St. Petersburg. Losing reliable access to Italian leather and German hardware threatened the input side of that promise directly, and threatened the cost base of a 50-to-70-person production operation that depended on both.

What happened next is where the public record runs out. No source — company statement, trade press, or otherwise — documents how Two-ta secured replacement leather or hardware, renegotiated its supply lines, or absorbed the cost of doing so. What is documented is the outcome: the brand kept producing through 2023, kept releasing roughly monthly new models, and kept operating at scale through 2024, 2025 and into 2026. Made-to-order pricing on newer pieces — the “Marion” bag ran to roughly 10,900 RUB in 2023 — suggests costs rose, but not in a way that interrupted the business. The brand’s continued growth across 2023–2026 implies it found a way through the 2022 disruption; how it did — alternative tanneries, parallel-import channels, hardware substitution, some combination of all three — is not documented in public sources. Continuity, not a disclosed mechanism, is the evidence available.

What the model looks like after the shock

The business that emerged from 2022 looks, on its surface, much like the one that entered it — still vertically integrated, still direct-to-consumer only, still built around in-house-trained masters rather than an outsourced supply chain. What changed was scale. A second retail point opened in Moscow in 2020, on 3rd Krasnoselskaya, adding a city to the St. Petersburg base just as the sanctions shock approached; that second-city footprint held through the disruption rather than contracting back to one. By 2025, the company’s self-reported headcount had passed 70 — up from the 50-plus RBC Style counted in 2019 — spread across production, sales, management and marketing.

No wholesale or marketplace channel emerged during this period. An inactive Etsy listing exists in the brand’s history but functions as no meaningful export channel today. Two-ta’s growth, in other words, came entirely from deepening its own direct retail and production base in Russia — not from diversifying its sales channels or its geography.

Where the model goes from here

Two-ta enters its seventeenth year of production with a “Petersburg Inside” tagline — a formal positioning statement tying the brand’s identity explicitly to its home city — and a 2026 marketing campaign built around a city-anniversary treasure hunt. Both moves double down on the local-identity half of the brand’s original promise, the half that survived 2022 intact, rather than reaching toward the imported-materials half that came under pressure.

The open question is durability, not survival: whether a 70-person, two-city, DTC-only workshop can keep scaling on a materials strategy the brand itself has never disclosed since 2022. The public record shows continuity through a shock built to break exactly this kind of business. It does not yet show how.
