Plus: the companies that sailed home when Ayutthaya burned.

Hiding in plain sight. Not for long.

This week's throughline is about who actually shows up when things go wrong — and it isn't always who you'd expect. In 1767, the foreign trading companies that had spent a century fighting over Ayutthaya's business packed up and sailed home the moment Burmese armies arrived at the gates. The residents who had nowhere else to go stayed and fought. Two and a half centuries later, the same pattern shows up in a Moscow fashion house: when a 2022 export ban shut down her supply chain overnight, founder Olesya Shipovskaya didn't take the easy exit and rebrand the disaster as an opportunity, the way everyone around her wanted to. She had built the business herself, with nothing but a loan and a lot of late nights teaching herself the industry — she had no outside partner ready to walk, so she didn't walk either.

George Town tells the same story from the other side. A free port built a thriving multicultural trading district over two centuries. Then a UNESCO heritage listing meant to protect it made the rents too expensive for the very shopkeepers whose businesses earned that protection in the first place. Commitment builds things. But it turns out even good intentions can price the committed people right out of the room.

This Week's Takeaway

When something goes wrong, watch who actually stays — not who talks about opportunity. The people with no way out are usually the ones who fix it.
